"People have come to love it,"
"It's a landmark of sorts. When it goes down, people want to know what is happening."
"We're working with an artifact,"
A 30-foot double-sided rainbow sign in Central Square was taken down for rehabilitation after being hit with graffiti, rust and vandalism. The sign began as a Blockbuster video sign and degraded after the store closed in 2009. In 2018 two artists were commissioned to redesign it in a retro neon style with a rainbow representing the LGBTQ+ community and vibrant colors to reflect neighborhood diversity. The sign, installed above The Street Theory Collective, is a grandfathered nonconforming structure that may only be repainted while retaining its original size and shape.
