A third round of U.S. retaliatory strikes in northwest Syria killed Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated leader. CENTCOM said al-Jasim had direct ties to the Islamic State member responsible for the Dec. 13 ambush that killed Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard and civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat. Adm. Brad Cooper said the death demonstrates U.S. resolve and warned there is no safe place for those who conduct, plot, or inspire attacks on American citizens and warfighters. The strikes are part of Operation "Hawkeye Strike," which targeted more than 100 Islamic State infrastructure and weapons sites with partners including Jordan and Syria. The operation was ordered to target ISIS elements regrouping after the ouster of Bashar Assad.
