U.S. Downgrades Travel Risk for This Caribbean Destination-What It Means
"The updated warning was published on Jan. 17, but the department noted there were no updates or modifications to risk factors travelers may face on the island. "Violent crime is a risk throughout Jamaica. The homicide rate reported by the Government of Jamaica is among the highest in the Western Hemisphere," the State Department wrote in its advisory, but added "Tourist areas generally see lower rates of violent crime than other parts of the country.""
"The State Department now classifies Jamaica under a Level 2 advisory, warning American travelers to exercise increased caution when heading there. Previously, the country was listed under a higher Level 3 advisory. The updated warning was published on Jan. 17, but the department noted there were no updates or modifications to risk factors travelers may face on the island. The department recommended travelers who do go to Jamaica avoid walking or driving at night, avoid public buses, and stay clear of remote places."
"The department also offers free alerts through its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which allows the government to more easily contact travelers in an emergency. The department also cautioned American travelers that "basic and specialized medical care may not be available in many parts of Jamaica," and health care facilities were particularly damaged in western Jamaica following last year's devastating Hurricane Melissa."
Jamaica's U.S. travel advisory was lowered to Level 2 from Level 3 on Jan. 17 while risk factors remained unchanged. Violent crime and a high homicide rate persist across the country, though tourist areas generally experience lower rates of violent crime. Travelers are advised to avoid walking or driving at night, avoid public buses, steer clear of remote places, stay aware of surroundings, and keep a low profile. Basic and specialized medical care may be unavailable in many areas, with western Jamaica's health facilities particularly damaged by Hurricane Melissa. The State Department offers STEP alerts and other countries have issued similar warnings.
