TSA workers miss a full paycheck, while travelers keep paying airport security fees
"They're panicking, they're scared, they're afraid. And they don't know what they're going to do. The majority of TSA employees work paycheck to paycheck and don't have enough savings to cover their expenses. They're just flat-out not paying their bills because they don't have any money."
"The officers can't afford to come to work. The gas is expensive right now. People have childcare. You have a mortgage that you have to pay. Where are you getting the money from to pay?"
A partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security that began February 14th has left approximately 45,000 TSA officers nationwide working without pay. These employees, who typically live paycheck to paycheck with minimal savings, have missed portions of paychecks and some received no compensation on recent pay dates. The financial crisis has forced officers to take second jobs, skip bill payments, and call out sick due to inability to afford work expenses like gas and childcare. This widespread absence has resulted in hours-long security lines at major airports including Houston, Atlanta, New Orleans, and Austin during peak spring break travel season.
