Silver Belle is a 53-foot red fir harvested Oct. 24 from the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada in Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The tree was 48 years old when harvested near the California-Nevada border. The selection marks the first time a red fir and the first time a tree from Nevada will serve as the Capitol Christmas tree. The name honors the Spirit of the Silver State. Silver Belle will begin a 3,700-mile tour with festivities at 13 stops en route to Washington, D.C. The tree has blue-green needles that point upward and dense, sturdy branches suitable for ornaments.
