Court records say Thompson argued with Cain around 3 a.m., was ordered to leave by police, returned three hours later and shot both; Cain died at the scene and Hayslip died a week later. Prosecutors describe Thompson as possessive, jealous and abusive. Defense attorneys contend Hayslip's death resulted from flawed medical care and failed intubation. The Texas board denied commutation and the US Supreme Court was asked to stay the execution.
