Auston Matthews was named captain of Team USA's 2026 Olympic men's ice hockey team. Matthew Tkachuk and Charlie McAvoy will serve as alternates. Bill Guerin cited their leadership at the 2025 Four Nations Face-Off and the complementary leadership traits each brings. Team USA lost to Canada last season but played strongly, with Jordan Binnington standing out in overtime. Matthews described the Olympic opportunity as very special and expressed honor at wearing the Team USA jersey. Matthews ranks second among active American goal scorers with 427 and also serves as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
