San Jose: Garbage truck runs over man sleeping in alley
"The collision was reported around 4:05 a.m. at a strip mall in the 2800 block of Bascom Avenue, according to the San Jose Police Department. An initial investigation determined that the victim, described only as a man, was covered in blankets and lying in a driveway just off Shamrock Drive when the driver of a Peterbilt garbage truck hit him. The injured man was taken to a hospital where he died, police said."
"The collision is being investigated as the city's 29th roadway death of the year, and the 14th to involve a pedestrian who died. At the same point in 2024, the city had recorded 43 traffic deaths, including 16 pedestrians. Last year in San Jose, garbage truck drivers fatally injured two people. On Jan. 22, 2024, a man was hit while walking at McKendrie and Elm streets, near the lacrosse and soccer fields for Bellarmine College Prep off West Hedding Street, and died a few days later."
