Richard Bilodeau indicted in killing of Lynbrook teen Theresa Fusco in 1984
"His arrest comes more than two decades after three men, who had been imprisoned for more than 17 years for the crime, were released after advanced DNA techniques showed no link between them and DNA from a vaginal swab of the victim. One of the then-suspects, John Kogut, had given police a confession to the murder that he later recanted."
""For over 40 years, the identity of the DNA from a vaginal swab taken from Theresa Fusco was unknown," Assistant District Attorney Jared Rosenblatt told the court. He said that when investigators matched the DNA with Bilodeau, they went out to talk to him at the Walmart. The prosecutor said during their conversation in July, the investigators remarked to him how current times are different from 1984."
Prosecutors in Nassau County announced an arrest in the 1984 killing of 16-year-old Theresa Fusco after DNA from a vaginal swab was matched to 63-year-old Richard Bilodeau. Bilodeau, a Suffolk County Walmart evening-shift worker, pleaded not guilty to two counts of second-degree murder — intentional murder and murder during a rape. Three men previously imprisoned for the crime were released after advanced DNA testing showed no link to the swab; one had recanted a confession. Fusco disappeared on Nov. 10, 1984, after being fired from a roller rink snack bar and was later found strangled. Bilodeau was remanded to jail; defense counsel reserved bail application.
