Paroled Upstate NY man accused of killing sister with hammer days after release
"Lester is on lifetime parole after he was sentenced in 1998 to 25 years to life in prison for a series of robberies in New York City. He was convicted of two counts of robbery and one count of burglary. An appellate court panel, in a 2001 decision denying Lester's appeal, noted witnesses had not been willing to testify in court against Lester because he intimidated them in phone calls from Rikers Island. Instead, prosecutors read the witnesses' grand jury testimony in court."
"Alphonso Lester, 60, was arraigned Thursday morning in Albany City Court before Judge Holly Trexler and charged with second-degree murder and burglary in the death of Angela Helms, 61. He was sent to Albany County jail without bail. Police were called to a location on Hudson Avenue near South Lake Avenue at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday to investigate the attack on Helms, who police say died from a massive head injury after Lester struck her in the head with the blunt object."

He was sent to Albany County jail without bail. Lester is on lifetime parole after a 1998 sentence of 25 years to life for multiple New York City robberies, and he was paroled in September 2021. An appellate panel noted witnesses had been unwilling to testify in his 2001 appeal because he intimidated them with phone calls from Rikers Island. He had two recent arrests but was not returned to state prison.
