LA Angels settle lawsuit with family of late pitcher Tyler Skaggs over fatal overdose
"We are deeply grateful to the members of this jury, and to our legal team, the family said in the statement. Their engagement and focus gave us faith, and now we have finality. This trial exposed the truth and we hope Major League Baseball will now do its part in holding the Angels accountable. While nothing can bring Tyler back, we will continue to honor his memory."
"Six years ago, the 27-year-old left-handed pitcher was found dead in the suburban Dallas hotel room where he was staying as the Angels were supposed to open a four-game series against the Texas Rangers. A coroner's report said the player choked to death on his vomit, and a toxic mix of alcohol, fentanyl and oxycodone was found in his system."
The Los Angeles Angels reached a confidential settlement in a wrongful-death lawsuit over Tyler Skaggs' 2019 overdose after a civil trial. Skaggs' widow Carli and his parents alleged communications director Eric Kay was addicted and distributing painkillers to players. Kay provided a fentanyl-laced pill that Skaggs snorted; Kay was convicted in 2022 of supplying the counterfeit oxycodone and sentenced to 22 years. Skaggs was found dead in a Dallas hotel room; a coroner reported choking on vomit and a toxic mix of alcohol, fentanyl and oxycodone. The family said the settlement brings finality and urged MLB to hold the Angels accountable; the team said it was unaware and would have sought help.
