""Fire Franklin""
""How it all turned so bad so fast," one Penn State athletic department source said, "I don't know.""
""They were either gonna win it all -- or they were gonna implode.""
Penn State's season unraveled as fans repeatedly chanted "Fire Franklin" after an earlier Clarkson hockey upset and throughout a 22-21 loss to Northwestern. James Franklin appeared defeated after a third straight loss, hugged remaining players on the field, and left through the south tunnel, sending his wife and daughter ahead to avoid fan vitriol. Fans lined the underpass to the locker room. The Nittany Lions began the season ranked No. 2 with substantial investment in talent and staff and a three-year starting quarterback in Drew Allar, yet unmet expectations and a history of collapsing in big games culminated in an early-season implosion.
