ICE arrests asylum-seeker at S.F. immigration court after weeks without detentions
"After a majority of the cases in the morning's docket had finished and the courtroom had emptied out, a woman who appeared to be in her early 30s arrived late for her 10:30 a.m. hearing, the sources said. She had flown into San Francisco from Texas to attend her hearing, they said, and like the others had tried to hire an attorney. But, she told Judge O'Brian, she had fallen victim to a scam impersonating a legal service and appeared in court without counsel."
"The Department of Homeland Security attorney then moved to dismiss her case, the sources said, following a pattern whereby federal attorneys seek dismissals in order to expedite deportations. O'Brien agreed to the motion and when the woman exited the courtroom, ICE officers were waiting in the hallway. The agents handcuffed her and led her down the hallway out of sight."
An asylum-seeker was arrested and detained by ICE in the hallway outside a San Francisco immigration courtroom after a judge granted a DHS motion to dismiss her case. The woman, appearing to be in her early 30s, arrived late for her 10:30 a.m. hearing after flying from Texas and said she had fallen victim to a scam impersonating a legal service and had no counsel. DHS attorneys moved to dismiss her case, citing a pattern of seeking dismissals to expedite deportations. ICE officers were waiting when she exited, handcuffed her, and led her away. At least 120 immigrants have been arrested at the city's immigration courthouses since May.
