""I was following him for at least 25 to 30 minutes trying to hold my cool and give him the benefit of the doubt that you see me behind you, and it's obvious I am driving at a faster speed, and he could see me in his mirror, but he was just like ignoring all the different pullover spots," Pua told SFGATE. Pua, who was driving her sister to the airport, said there are signs on the road instructing drivers to let locals pass."
""There were multiple spots that he could have pulled over, but he didn't," she said, adding that the way he was driving was also making her angry. "He was just like swerving on the road, like braking around the corners and, at one point, stopping on the bridges or yielding in areas where he didn't need to yield." Pua said there was a moment when Carroll braked so hard, she almost hit him."
An afternoon drive on the Road to Hana escalated into a confrontation between two visitors from Texas and a Maui family, leaving a rental car window smashed and people with minor injuries. The Road to Hana is a narrow, 52-mile route with more than 600 curves, abrupt turns and frequent congestion, and residents expect visitors to pull over at designated spots to let locals pass. Maui resident Heaven-lei Pua followed the Texas couple for 25 to 30 minutes as they repeatedly ignored pullover spots, swerved, braked around corners and stopped on bridges. After honking, the driver made an obscene gesture and the situation intensified, prompting a physical confrontation.
