On January 23, 2023, seven people died when a gunman opened fire at multiple mushroom farms in Half Moon Bay. The shooting exposed poor farmworker living and housing conditions and prompted local response. Nearly 50 homes have been built in San Mateo County through a partnership between Half Moon Bay and the county. The city is pursuing a permanent memorial but has not yet secured funding. Survivor Pedro Romero Perez lost his brother Jose and survived five gunshot wounds; he is learning accordion as part of music therapy with ALAS. Local groups continue advocating for housing, mental health services, and support for farmworkers.
