Former Worcester councilor found guilty of assault on police officer related to ICE arrest
"The special prosecutor asked that I repent by issuing a direct apology, in exchange for dropping the charges with probation. I chose the truth," Etel Haxhiaj wrote in a statement on Instagram."
""Prosecuting mothers for protecting mothers isn't justice," she wrote."
"Haxhiaj was accused of shoving Worcester Police officer Shauna McGuirk in the chest as the officer tried to escort the councilor away from the ICE vehicle, according to a complaint filed by police in court."
Etel Haxhiaj, a former Worcester city councilor, was convicted of misdemeanor assault and battery on a police officer and received six months' probation and was acquitted of interfering with an officer. The May Eureka Street incident involved federal immigration agents arresting Rosane Ferreira de Oliveira while neighbors confronted agents and Worcester police provided crowd control. A police complaint alleged Haxhiaj shoved Officer Shauna McGuirk as officers tried to escort her away from an ICE vehicle. Body camera footage shows Haxhiaj reaching for a teen daughter and being held back. The Northwestern District Attorney prosecuted the case after a conflict of interest; Haxhiaj pleaded not guilty and posted on Instagram refusing to apologize.
