"Murder at The U, ESPN's new, seven-part podcast on the slaying of Bryan Pata and the two-decade odyssey to find his killer, debuts this Thursday. Listen here. Police did not arrest ex-Hurricane Rashaun Jones in Pata's death until August 2021. ""Some people plead no contest because it's in their best interest to resolve the case. It means that the gamble is something you're not willing to take," she said. "Now, you're a fairly young man. If this were to resolve, somehow, your life would change because you're going to have this on your record. But you've been in for five years for it now and it's not like you're going to go out and have a professional career in football.""
Bryan Pata, a 22-year-old University of Miami defensive tackle and projected second- or third-round NFL pick, was shot in the head in the parking lot of his off-campus apartment on Nov. 7, 2006. Police arrested former teammate Rashaun Jones in August 2021 and prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder, alleging the teammates had "ongoing issues." Jones, 39, has been held in custody about 4½ years amid court delays and attorney changes and has maintained his innocence. State prosecutors offered a 15-year plea with credit for time served. Judge Cristina Miranda urged Jones to consider the plea during a Feb. 2 hearing.
