Famed Hawaii bay closed after shark attack
""Chance is a well-respected lifeguard and surfer, and one of the humblest people you will ever meet,""
""He embodies the true spirit of Aloha, and is a shining star, always happy and smiling.""
""Shark Sighted" and "No Swimming""
The shark attack occurred Wednesday at 3:10 p.m. while Chance Swanson, a Kauai resident, surfed near the Pine Trees surf break in Hanalei Bay. The shark bit Swanson on the leg, causing serious injuries. Swanson was taken first to Wilcox Medical Center and later transported to the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu. A GoFundMe started by his mother is raising funds for medical expenses and describes Swanson as a well-respected lifeguard and surfer who embodies the spirit of Aloha. The species of shark is unknown. Beaches were closed and lifeguards posted warning signs; a 3- to 4-foot reef shark was sighted at Poipu Beach the same day with no injuries reported.
