"I'm not aware in my 35-year history in the aviation market where we've had a situation where we're taking these kinds of measures,"
"We're in new territory in terms of government shutdowns."
"We can't ignore it,"
The Federal Aviation Administration will reduce flights by 10% in 40 high-volume U.S. markets to protect airspace safety during the government shutdown. Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since Oct. 1 and most are on mandatory overtime six days a week, limiting opportunities for additional income. Staffing pressures are driving operational decisions that could cancel hundreds or thousands of flights, with estimates up to 1,800 flights and roughly 268,000 seats affected. Reductions take effect Friday, and normal operations will not resume immediately after the shutdown ends until staffing stabilizes. Airlines and unions are urging Congress to end the shutdown.
