Ex-cop testifies in own defense about shooting that left unarmed Whittier man paralyzed
""I didn't want a bullet in my chest," Murillo told jurors in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Thursday."
""I can see the back of his elbows, the back of his arms and there's a lot of movement going on and as he's starting to turn his body, at that time, at that point, I believe he is going to shoot me," Murillo said of the seconds before he opened fire."
Salvador Murillo, a former Whittier undercover detective, chased a man, Nicholas Carrillo, after a car linked to a robbery; Murillo fired four rounds in two bursts. One shot severed Carrillo's spine and left him instantly paralyzed. Murillo said he feared being shot when he saw Carrillo reach toward his waist and that he heard three gunshots that were actually fired by his partner, Cynthia Lopez. Police later determined Carrillo was not involved in the robbery that prompted the stop. Murillo is standing trial for assault and testified in his own defense, a rare prosecution of an on-duty officer in Los Angeles County, where no officer has been convicted in such a case since 2000.
