Canceled grants get the spotlight at a Capitol Hill 'science fair'
Briefly

The Trump administration's cuts to science funding have endangered the future of research conducted by scientists like Sumit Chanda at Scripps Research. This funding reduction has jeopardized nine pandemic response centers that were previously supported by the National Institutes of Health, aimed at creating antiviral drugs to combat potential outbreaks. A recent event on Capitol Hill showcased prominent researchers who highlighted how these funding cuts could hinder vital scientific advancements. According to Nobel laureate Adam Riess, basic science research is the foundation of modern innovations important for saving lives.
These discoveries may not just save our own lives, but the lives of people we love. Nearly every innovation that defines our era, every breakthrough from my field and from those of my colleagues, traces back to basic science research.
When the next pandemic happens, we rush drugs to, say, Wuhan. We contain that epidemic. So it doesn't become a pandemic.
