Brooklyn Diocese to settle 1,100 more sex abuse cases after paying $100M+ in victim compensation
"to avoid the time, expense and emotional strain for victim-survivors,"
"The Diocese and our legal counsel have spoken with attorneys representing hundreds of victim-survivors to begin this process,"
"As our global resolution process moves forward, we continue to pray for the victim-survivors, their families, and all others impacted by sexual abuse. May the Lord our God bring healing and peace,"
The Diocese of Brooklyn will settle roughly 1,100 remaining sexual abuse lawsuits and compensate survivors under the New York Child Victims Act. The effort aims to avoid the time, expense and emotional strain of revisiting individual cases in court. Diocesan legal counsel has spoken with attorneys representing hundreds of victim-survivors to begin the process. More than 90% of the remaining allegations are over 35 years old, with the vast majority from the 1960s and 1970s. The Diocese has spent over $100 million settling claims from more than 500 accusers since 2017 through an Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program. Settlement funds will come from monetizing existing assets, not from donations or school closures. Some survivor attorneys called the update positive, while at least one critic labeled it "nothing short of a PR stunt."
