"They were horrified. ICE took children into their custody in violation of a court order and flew them around the country for eight hours. There's a word for that. It's kidnapping."
"The government's behavior yesterday was entirely beyond the pale. They were treated like animals."
Hayam El Gamal and her five children were released from ICE detention after 10 months due to a federal judge's order. However, upon reporting for a check-in, they were re-detained and faced deportation to Egypt. Their lawyers quickly sought emergency rulings from federal courts, which again ordered the government not to deport them. Eventually, the plane carrying the family was turned around mid-flight, returning them to Denver. Concerns were raised about the treatment of the family and the legality of ICE's actions.
