A jury in Newport News, Virginia awarded $10 million to former first-grade teacher Abby Zwerner, who was shot in January 2023 by a 6-year-old student. The jury found former assistant principal Ebony Parker liable for failing to act after multiple staff reported the child had a gun in his backpack. Zwerner required six surgeries, spent nearly two weeks in the hospital, and does not have full use of her left hand; a bullet remains in her chest. Parker was the only defendant; the superintendent and principal had been dismissed from the case.
