Rishi Sunak officially becomes British prime minister
"I understand how difficult this moment is,"
"When the opportunity to serve comes along, you cannot question the moment, only your willingness,"
"So I stand here before you ready to lead our country into the future. To put your needs above politics. To reach out and build a government that represents the very best traditions of my party."
Rishi Sunak was officially appointed prime minister after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. He is the fifth person to hold the role in the last six years. At 42, he is the youngest British leader in more than 200 years and the first person of color and first Hindu to hold the premiership. He acknowledged a profound economic crisis and pledged to put citizens' needs above politics while building a government reflecting Conservative traditions. He inherits a deeply splintered party after tumultuous leadership under Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, with Truss serving just 44 days.
