Greater Manchester aims to support the government in welfare reform through a shared responsibility within the Labour party. The current system under the Department for Work and Pensions is ineffective. The region is designated as the UK’s first prevention demonstrator, aiming to prevent negative outcomes for residents and reduce public service costs. A whole-person and whole-system approach is necessary, addressing linked issues such as housing, personal debt, and mental health. By adopting a bottom-up approach and focusing on essential support, the region believes it can achieve significant savings while promoting better lives for residents.
With a decade of devolution behind us, Greater Manchester is ready to step forward as the UK’s first prevention demonstrator, showing how we can prevent poor outcomes for residents and rising costs of public services.
The Department for Work and Pensions system didn't work for people before last week's debate and it still doesn't now. What is needed is a unifying version of reform, and we think we can help with that.
