First government minister quits and tells Starmer to resign; calls for his resignation rise and more aides quit
"“I urge the Prime Minister to do the right thing for the country and the Party and set a timetable for an orderly transition,” she posted on X. Four other UK government aides resigned last night as they joined scores of Labour MPs calling for Keir Starmer to stand down following a disastrous set of local election results."
"“Keir Starmer did important work to change the Labour Party, and governing in a time like this will never be easy. “But the message from last week's elections was clear - the prime minister has lost the confidence of the public to lead this change.”"
"“However, regrettably, it is now clear that the prime minister no longer has the trust or confidence of the public to lead this change.” Mr Rutland said the prime minister had “lost authority” within the parliamentary Labour Party and across the country, and “will not be able to regain it”."
"“Time and time again, speaking with voters at their doors, I heard little dislike for local councillors nor for the Labour Party, but the animosity towards the prime minister was clear from every voter who was choosing to vote for another part"
Several Labour MPs and government aides have resigned or called for Keir Starmer to stand down following disastrous local election results. A parliamentary private secretary to the health secretary and another to the environment secretary urged the prime minister to set a timetable for an orderly transition. Cabinet office and deputy prime minister aides also resigned and called for new leadership. Additional calls for Starmer to step aside have grown to 63 MPs by the evening. Resignations cite loss of public confidence, loss of authority within the parliamentary Labour Party, and clear voter animosity toward the prime minister despite support for local councillors and the Labour Party.
