Chris Wormald is stepping down as cabinet secretary by mutual consent after just over a year in the job and is likely to receive a significant payout, with a reported salary of about £200,000. Romeo is viewed as a dynamic, non-traditional official contrasted with Wormald, who drew concerns about driving Whitehall reform. Former Foreign Office official Simon McDonald urged more due diligence, while allies defended Romeo’s leadership and reform credentials.
