Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced policies to remove taxpayer-funded benefits from asylum seekers who break the law or refuse to work, with the measures applying only to new arrivals. Currently Channel crossings receive free housing, cash and permission to work if claims exceed a year. The Home Office plans to deploy artificial intelligence to assess age claims by migrants who present as children. Migration minister Mike Tapp said AI would provide extra tools to help officials judge difficult age cases. Mahmood described illegal migration as a broken system and pledged to restore order while creating new safe routes for people.
