The Independent describes funding journalism to separate facts from messaging across issues including reproductive rights, climate change, and Big Tech. It says donations support reporters on the ground and emphasizes trust across political viewpoints, with no paywalls for reporting and analysis. A YouGov poll commissioned by SumUp finds that one in five Britons cannot afford a summer holiday, while 30% have postponed travel. Nineteen percent say they cannot afford to travel at all. The poll links financial strain to cost-of-living pressures driven by conflict in the Middle East. Oil prices have risen due to fighting between Iran and the US, disrupting flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a major global shipping route for gas and oil.
"The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it. Your support makes all the difference."
"One in five Britons say they cannot afford a summer holiday this year as the cost of living fuelled by the conflict in the Middle East continues to rise, a new poll has found. Nearly a third (30 per cent) of Brits have postponed holidays or travel this year, the polling conducted by YouGov and commissioned by fintech company SumUp shows. A further one in five (19 per cent) say they cannot afford to travel at all."
"The price of oil has soared amid fighting between Iran and the US, with a knock-on effect on the cost of energy, food and jet fuel. The source of the uncertainty is disruption to the flow of oil in the Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, amid Iranian threats on oil tankers following the US's attack of the country in February. The strait is key waterway for global trade, through which around 20 per cent of the world's gas and oil is shipped."
