Empty trains to Euston highlight why scrapping HS2 to Manchester makes no sense
"In the upcoming railway timetable change on 15th December, Avanti West Coast's 7am service from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston will cease to carry passengers. The service, which is quite busy as it's timetabled to arrive in London just before 9am, is also regularly delayed. Over the past ten days, the services arrived at Euston on time just twice. On average, the delays were just inside the 15-minute cut-off to get a delay refund,"
"The train and its staff are still needed in Euston to run the 09:33 service from London to Manchester. So Avanti still needs to get the train to London, and hence the headlines that the 7am service from Manchester will still run to Euston, but is barred from carrying passengers. The regulator has had to weigh up the options of running a service that's potentially so unreliable it significantly skews the railway's reliability figures and leads to lots of customer complaints..."
From 15 December Avanti West Coast's 7:00 Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston service will not carry passengers. The service is timetabled to arrive before 09:00 but has been regularly delayed, arriving on time only twice in the past ten days. Average delays have been just inside the 15-minute refund threshold, with three days warranting compensation. The Office of Rail and Road has effectively cancelled passenger operation of the service while still requiring the train and crew in Euston to operate the 09:33 London–Manchester service. For at least five months the train will run empty each morning, allowing it to be held up or rerouted to avoid congestion and reduce the risk of causing delays to other services.
