Clapham Junction's grimy underpass gets a bright new look with first art panels installed
"The 100 metre long Falcon Road underpass runs under the railways to the eastern side of Clapham Junction station and is the only route north-south under the railways in the area. Despite how busy it is, it's quite a shabby route, with two narrow pedestrian paths, the walls lined with stained and broken tiles, and the floor covered in pigeon droppings."
"Getting rid of the pigeons was high up on the priorities gathered from the public consultation prior to work starting, so apart from new meshwork to cover up the gaps, they're also adding anti-pigeon spikes to every surface that pigeons might want to perch on. The soffit under the bridge has been deep cleaned and repainted a deep blue, with the blue colour extending to the top and bottom of the walls."
Falcon Road underpass at Clapham Junction is receiving a long-awaited makeover with the first decorative panels installed. The 100-metre underpass is the only north-south pedestrian route in the area and had stained tiles, narrow paths, and pigeon droppings. Wandsworth Council is delivering the scheme after a London Festival of Architecture competition selected a design by GPAD and POoR Collective. Panels will depict local landmarks and flora. Preparatory work included deep cleaning, a deep-blue repaint of the soffit, meshwork, and anti-pigeon spikes. Artwork will leave top and bottom gaps for bridge inspections and a patterned band will conceal a protruding cable conduit.
