Stephen Sondheim exclusively used Blackwing 602 pencils, known for their flat tail and lightweight design. He purchased many boxes before they were discontinued. Although he disliked the drying erasers, he appreciated the softness of the lead. Sondheim found the process of re-sharpening the pencils enjoyable, even more so than writing itself.
