Lyft Is Behind Uber In The Autonomous Taxi Race. Waymo Will Help It Catch Up
"When I think about autonomous ride-sharing companies, I think about Waymo, Uber and Tesla in that order. Alphabet's autonomy play is the clear technology leader, with thousands of driverless cars already transporting paying passengers. Uber has been working on developing both the hardware and business side of the problem for a decade. And Tesla has bet the farm on its low-cost, vision-based platform, with mixed results."
"While Waymo has the undisputed best autonomous vehicle tech, and it does operate its own ride-hailing service in markets like San Fransisco and Los Angeles, its goal isn't necessarily to replace Lyft or Uber. Its product is the "Waymo Driver," and it seems ready to sell it to anyone looking to make their fleet autonomous. Like many Alphabet brands (including Google), its strategy seems to be betting on every horse."
Waymo leads autonomous ride-sharing with thousands of driverless cars transporting paying passengers. Uber has pursued both hardware and business development in autonomy for about a decade. Tesla focuses on a low-cost, vision-based approach with mixed results. Lyft has lagged behind and pursued small partnerships, including a brief 2019 tie-up with Waymo, a May Mobility pilot in Atlanta, a Baidu deal for Europe, and plans to introduce Mobileye-powered cars in Dallas by 2026. Lyft will enable customers in Nashville to order Waymo vehicles directly through the Lyft app. Waymo aims to sell the 'Waymo Driver' broadly while partnering with multiple ride-hailing platforms.
