Memory chips are essential for computers because they store data and instructions while other functions run. DRAM is used in consumer devices, while HBM is required for AI accelerators such as GPUs due to memory-hungry workloads. An AI server can need roughly eight to 10 times the DRAM of a traditional server and far more high-bandwidth memory than consumer devices. Historically, memory upgrades were inexpensive and improved steadily, following capacity-for-cost trends similar to Moore’s Law, despite boom-bust cycles. Recent AI demand has made memory the most valuable commodity in the AI economy, driving major stock gains, while concerns remain that the current boom may eventually pass.
