Beating Big Tech At Social: Nostr's Blueprint For A Bitcoin-Integrated New Internet
"While Nostr was founded in 2020/2021, it only really gained initial traction once Will Caserin launched Damus and Jack Dorsey tweeted about it. A few months later, the first Nostr world conference was held in Costa Rica (Nostrica), and things really started to move. Over the next 18 months, many - myself included - were convinced Nostr was going to take off."
"Content creators want to go where the audience is and content consumers want to go where the best creators are. This is a very hard cycle to break, especially when TikTok, Instagram and X are so good at what they do. I've seen firsthand how much of a chore it is for people to post on "yet another platform," even if it's just copy-pasting the same content."
"Those who do are on X, Substack and Rumble, not because those platforms are more censorship resistant, but because they have better marketing departments and can win the narrative war. Even Instagram has changed: It's full of memes and truth bombs that would have got you perma-banned only 6 months ago. The truth is that people's memories are short and most of them just don't have the technical prowess to know why Nostr is superior in this department."
Nostr gained early momentum after Damus launched and a high-profile tweet and an early conference in Costa Rica accelerated adoption. Over eighteen months many participants expected rapid growth. By late 2025 growth stalled and activity appears flat or declining despite improved apps and clients. Two main causes are identified: competition for content where creators and audiences concentrate on dominant platforms, creating high friction for posting to another service; and the waning appeal of censorship resistance, since few mainstream users prioritize it and larger platforms win the narrative through marketing and broad reach. Conditions for change could still arise.
