Readers can vote for the Bay Area News Group girls Athlete of the Week from a weekly list of nominees. Voting excludes bots and artificial methods; votes by email or after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted. Winners are announced each Friday online and in the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections. Nominations are accepted at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com until 11 a.m. each Monday, and MaxPreps statistics submitted by coaches and statisticians are reviewed. Current nominees for performances from Dec. 15-20 include soccer and basketball standouts such as Bella Alpert, Mia Borja, Edeel Hersi, Kayla Lichaa, Briana Lopez, and Natalie Perkins.
