"For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner. This week, we consider performances from Jan. 5-10 . Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Vote as many times as you'd like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting. Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted. Scroll to the bottom for the poll."
"Roman Alvarez, Los Altos soccer: Alvarez scored two goals to lead Los Altos to a 3-2 win over Homestead. Los Altos is 6-2-1. Wesley Brassfield, Valley Christian Wrestling: The sophomore pinned his opponent at the 152-pound weight class in 23 seconds to help lead the Warriors to a 64-11 win over Riordan. PJ Brayer, Piedmont basketball: Brayer scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Piedmont to a 69-58 victory over St. Joseph Notre Dame. Piedmont is 11-3."

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday and allow unlimited votes without bots or other artificial methods; votes by email and after the deadline are not counted. Winners are announced each Friday online and in the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections. Nominations for future polls are accepted via email to highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com until 11 a.m. each Monday. Nominees include Roman Alvarez (two goals, Los Altos soccer), Wesley Brassfield (pinned opponent in 23 seconds, Valley Christian wrestling), and PJ Brayer (27 points, Piedmont basketball).
