Deadly Day in Italy's Piedmont Region as 3 Separate Avalanches Kill 2 People and Leave 2 Injured - SnowBrains
"The first avalanche struck in the morning in the upper Maira Valley in the province of Cueno, above the town of Accelli, at an altitude of 2,330 meters (7,644 feet) and buried two alpinists. While the alarm was raised immediately and three helicopters responded from numerous rescue teams, the woman could only be pronounced dead. Her partner survived with serious injuries and was taken to hospital. Images from the scene show the scale of the avalanche that struck the popular backcountry route."
"Later in the afternoon, a second avalanche occurred on Mount Albergian near Pragelato, in the province of Turin. The alarm was raised around 2 p.m. and rescue services landed with a full team of avalanche dogs in the region as well as an additional team with four mountain rescue specialists. A woman had been swept away but had been dug out by her partner. While she had suffered severe chest trauma and lower limb trauma and was starting to suffer from hypothermia, she survived."
Unstable snow conditions and heavy recent snowfall in Piedmont produced a series of avalanches on January 2. Around three meters of snow fell over the Christmas period, while other Alpine areas remain snow-poor, contributing to varied risk patterns. In the upper Maira Valley above Accelli at 2,330 meters an avalanche buried two alpinists; a woman died and her partner survived with serious injuries. On Mount Albergian near Pragelato a woman was swept away, dug out by her partner, suffered severe chest and lower limb trauma and hypothermia, and was transported by stretcher to hospital. A third slide in Conca del Pra killed a ski mountaineer.
