Alta Ski Area Pushes Opening Day Back To December
"While the East Coast is partying with lots of snow and plenty of open ski resorts, many states in the west are still waiting to see their first solid snowfall. As such, many ski areas in Utah have been forced to delay their opening days, and Alta Ski Area just joined that list. "Based on the extended forecast and lack of favorable snowmaking temperatures, Alta Ski Area's targeted Opening Day has moved to Friday, December 5th-conditions permitting." - Alta Ski Area"
"Alta was initially scheduled to open on Friday, November 21st, but like Brian Head, Solitude, and Park City, they've been forced to push that date back. Uphill travel on the mountain has closed in preparation for opening day, even though it's now more than two weeks away. Last year, Alta opened on Friday, November 22nd. Generally the Utah ski resort sees some of the deepest snow in the country, with an average snowfall of 548 inches. This year so far they've only seen 19 inches, and not much of it has stuck around."
East Coast ski areas are experiencing heavy snowfall and many open resorts while many western states await substantial snow. Several Utah ski areas, including Brian Head, Solitude, Park City, and Alta, have delayed opening days. Alta's original opening date of November 21 moved to December 5 based on the extended forecast and lack of favorable snowmaking temperatures. Uphill travel on the mountain has closed ahead of opening. Alta typically averages 548 inches of snowfall annually, but this season has recorded only 19 inches so far, with little of that snow remaining.
