NASA's Artemis II mission has left Earth's orbit
""Today, for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972, humans have departed Earth orbit," said Dr. Lori Glaze from NASA Headquarters in Washington."
""Orion is operating with crew for the first time in space, and we are gathering critical data, and learning from each step.""
""Seeing the entire globe from pole to pole after leaving Earth's orbit was a spectacular moment," said Commander Reid Wiseman."
""The mission is taking NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, as well as Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, on a 10-day trip around the moon.""
The Orion capsule, named Integrity, has successfully left Earth's orbit after completing a key engine burn that provided necessary thrust for its lunar journey. This mission, Artemis II, is the first crewed flight of the Artemis program and the first human venture beyond Low Earth Orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. The crew, consisting of NASA astronauts and a Canadian astronaut, will embark on a 10-day trip around the moon, capturing photographs and observations of the lunar surface, including areas never seen by humans before.
