Canadian update: Matt Wilkinson dealt, Bo Naylor optioned as San Francisco and Cleveland complete trade
"Before the 2026 regular season, Wilkinson took part in the World Baseball Classic, competing with Canada for the first time in his professional career. The 23-year-old opened eyes in the tournament, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings, including two shutout innings against the United States of America in Canada's quarterfinal loss. Entering the top of the eighth inning, Wilkinson retired Alex Bregman and Roman Anthony before finishing off the inning with a strikeout of Cal Raleigh, who hit 60 home runs a season ago."
The San Francisco Giants traded two-time Gold Glove winner Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians sent the 29th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft and Canadian pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson to the Giants. Wilkinson, from Ladner, British Columbia, signed with the Guardians on July 22, 2023 after being selected in the 10th round of the 2023 MLB Draft. He spent two years at Central Arizona Junior College before turning pro. In his first professional season across Single-A and High-A, he posted an 8-6 record with a 1.90 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a .169 opponent average, striking out 174 batters in 118 2/3 innings. In 2025 at High-A Lake County, his results declined to a 4-9 record, 4.24 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and a .249 opponent average, with strikeouts dropping to 117. Before the 2026 regular season, he appeared for Canada in the World Baseball Classic, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings and striking out Alex Bregman, Roman Anthony, Cal Raleigh, and Bryce Harper.
