San Francisco students return to class for first time since teachers' strike
""We're so excited to be back and welcome all our students,""
""We're a community school, and this last week, we really came together as a community school.""
""We had a lot of our community partners come together and support our families.""
""In terms of funding for this particular tentative agreement, we do believe that we have the resources. I was able to be fiscally responsible when we made those agreements with our partners,""
Nearly 50,000 San Francisco Unified School District students returned to classrooms Wednesday after a nearly five-day teachers' strike ended. Monday and Tuesday had been previously scheduled holidays, making Wednesday the first instructional day back. Visitacion Valley Elementary experienced joyful reunions, with Principal Sarah Seaton welcoming students and noting strong community partner support. An overnight bargaining session produced a tentative agreement that includes fully funded healthcare for educators, wage improvements, new sanctuary policies, and protections from AI. United Educators of San Francisco called the deal the one they fought for. SFUSD will use part of its reserves, and the agreement remains tentative pending additional steps.
