Missing banker identified for second time as Bay Area John Doe
"In 1999, a leg washed up off Bodega Head, about five miles down the coast from Salmon Creek Beach. The foot was still inside a size 12 Rockport ProWalker shoe that had a custom-made orthopedic insert."
"Investigators requested Kinney's hospital records and learned he had foot problems and X-rays on file. The X-rays matched the leg found at Bodega Head."
"A woman living in Cleveland called the sheriff's office, saying her father, Walter Kinney, had lost touch with the family in the late 1990s."
"The DNA Doe Project volunteers quickly used the DNA profile provided to find a family in San Diego, leading to the identification of Walter Karl Kinney."
Remains discovered on Salmon Creek Beach in June 2022 were traced back to Walter Karl Kinney, who vanished in 1999. A family found a leg bone with surgical hardware, prompting a search by the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. The DNA Doe Project helped identify Kinney through genetic genealogy. His partial remains had previously been found in 1999, when a leg washed ashore. Kinney had a history of alcoholism and had lost contact with his family before his disappearance.
