Ukraine calls for special court to try Russian war leaders DW 06/26/2025
Briefly

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed an agreement with the Council of Europe to create a special tribunal for prosecuting Russian leaders for their role in the war against Ukraine. This tribunal, which aims to address the limitations of the International Criminal Court (ICC), is seen as essential for holding aggressors accountable. Zelenskyy emphasized Europe's collective responsibility in ensuring justice, while logistical details for the tribunal's establishment remain pending. The Council of Europe seeks to garner support from various countries for this initiative as ceasefire talks continue to stall.
We need to show clearly aggression leads to punishment and we must make it happen together, all of Europe.
Every war criminal must know there will be justice and that includes Russia.
The tribunal fills the gap created by the jurisdictional limitations of the ICC.
This would be the first special tribunal established by the Strasbourg-based CoE, which promotes human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
