"I'm so happy to break the world record. After the first 10km, I thought the world record was possible. I tried to keep pushing the pace in the final two kilometres."
"Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda regained the half-marathon world record on Sunday, storming to victory in a stunning time of 57 minutes and 20 seconds in Lisbon. The 25-year-old shaved 10 seconds off the previous world record, set by Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha in Valencia in 2024."
Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda won the half-marathon in Lisbon with a world record time of 57 minutes and 20 seconds, reclaiming the record he previously held in 2021. The 25-year-old improved upon Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha's 2024 record by 10 seconds. Kiplimo had attempted a faster time in Barcelona last year with 56:42, but World Athletics did not ratify the performance due to illegal pacing assistance. Kenya's Nicholas Kipkorir finished second in 58:08, followed by Gilbert Kiprotich in third at 58:59. Kiplimo, an Olympic bronze medalist in the 10,000m, expressed confidence after the first 10 kilometers and maintained his pace through the final two kilometers. His victory continues strong recent performances, including second place at the 2025 London Marathon and a win at last year's Chicago Marathon. Ethiopia's Tsigie Gebreselama won the women's race in 1:04:48.
