The Best Recovery Strategies (Learned from 15+ Years of Coaching) - Strength Running
"I've put myself through the rigors of cross country, trail races, the steeplechase, and my college coach's brutal workouts. Starting in 2010, I've been coaching endurance runners around the world competing in a variety of races and goals. From staying healthy to new marathon PR's, passing the FBI's fitness test, or building a big aerobic engine, coaching has provided an avenue for solving runner's problems."
"Throughout it all, recovery strategies have been put to the test: I even interviewed 9 pro athletes on their personal favorite approaches to recovery, compiling their advice in a free digital book. I'm a little obsessed. And while I love all the fun recovery toys on the market (they all have some value, in some contexts!), they're not the most effective recovery strategies for runners that exist."
Recovery is essential to adapt to run training and to achieve faster race times. Running experience since 1998 included workouts, racing, high-mileage training, cross country, trail races, and the steeplechase with intense coach-led workouts. Coaching of endurance runners since 2010 has supported athletes worldwide toward goals from injury prevention to marathon PRs and fitness tests. Repeated injuries cause reduced training and lost fitness, motivating a prevention-focused approach. Recovery strategies have been tested through athlete experience and interviews with nine professional runners. Recovery tools can help in context, but the most effective strategies emphasize consistent prevention, structured rest, and targeted recovery practices.
