Governors of California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii issued coordinated vaccine recommendations for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV ahead of the winter season to protect public health from federal interference. California enacted AB144 to allow state immunization guidance to be based on independent medical organizations instead of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The law permits reliance on groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. The California Department of Public Health said the update ensures access to life-saving vaccines and screenings and targets groups at highest risk, including older adults, people with chronic conditions, pregnant people, children under five, and long-term care residents. Public health leaders criticized recent federal changes to vaccine advisory committees as undermining independent, science-based oversight.
