""Recent surveys show Americans want to avoid ultra-processed foods, but we are inundated by them," Chiu said in a statement. "These companies engineered a public health crisis, they profited handsomely, and now they need to take responsibility for the harm they have caused.""
"The suit alleges that these companies committed "unfair and deceptive acts" in selling and marketing these foods, violating California's Unfair Competition Law and public nuisance statute."
"The foods in question include candy, chips, processed meats, sodas, cereals and other products with ingredients typically made in labs and not in home kitchens, according to the San Francisco City Attorney's Office."
San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu filed suit in San Francisco Superior Court against ten corporations, including Kraft Heinz, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, General Mills, Nestle USA, Mars, Mondelez, Post Holdings, Conagra, Kellanova and WK Kellogg. The suit alleges the companies sold and marketed addictive ultra-processed foods linked to Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, cardiovascular disease and cancer. It accuses the firms of unfair and deceptive acts that violate California's Unfair Competition Law and public nuisance statute. The suit seeks injunctions to stop such marketing, restitution, civil penalties and unspecified damages to reimburse local governments for related healthcare costs. The foods named include candy, chips, processed meats, sodas and cereals with ingredients typically made in labs rather than in home kitchens.
