Tsotne David Javahishvili, a 67-year-old researcher, is presumed to have crashed while flying a small plane off the coast of San Diego. The Cessna 240 he was piloting went missing after failing to land at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. The aircraft flew over the ocean for over 500 miles before disappearing. Javahishvili, a prominent biologist, was remembered fondly by friends, including Scripps Research CEO Peter Schultz, who announced a postdoctoral fellowship in his name to honor his contributions to science and medicine. Friends described him as intelligent and passionate about flying.
